Interview: Getting To Know Tulliah

19-year-old singer/songwriter Tulliah hails from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, and has just dropped her new single. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… currently sitting on the kitchen table, listening to The Strokes MTV $2 Dollar Bill Concert and have officially fallen in love with Julian Casablancas. I’ve only just started listening to them and have only really heard their newest album “The New Abnormal” so listening to ‘Is This It’ for the first time live is AMAZING. You know when you hear a new artist or song and they have a massive impact on you, this is that moment.

‘Distant Dreams’ is… kinda a piss-take but also not. It is pretty much written from the perspective of being in a dream where everything is great, your problems have disappeared and you got no one telling you what to do. But then in reality I’m just another girl in a nightclub vibing to tunes, drinking and wants to be asked on a date. Not gonna lie though, I love a night out with friends doing exactly that.

Home is… my one of my fav places. I live right next to the beach and have a pretty garden that my mum has designed, she is very talented. It’s where I listen to Tame Impala’s 2020 Aria Award performance of ‘On Track’ at least once a day, hang with my dog and make music. It’s probably time for me to move out though. I’m hoping to move out in June to the city. Then when I come back down to the Mornington Peninsula it will be like a mini holiday. My family will be able to sleep well without me waking them up in the middle of the night when I have song ideas.

I spend too much time… ON MY PHONE. I need to get off it and set a timer because it distracts me from life. Actually I’m gonna set a timer thing straight after I finish writing this up. It’s such a beautiful day today too. The skies are bright blue and it’s not too cold but also not too hot. So I can wear jeans and a t-shirt and not get sweaty. The perfect weather.

I’ve never… watched Star Wars and don’t intend to and have also never watched a full Harry Potter movie. I’ve tried so many times to watch a full Harry Potter movie but I always fall asleep unintentionally. I will get there one day.

2020 was… different but actually pretty good for me overall. I feel like I’m one of the few people that say this. I accomplished a fair bit despite the circumstances. Went on my first regional tour for 2 months (just before covid), signed a record deal, made a debut EP, have a really lovely team around me now and was lucky enough to have parents that let me work with them while there was no live music.

It might surprise people to learn that… I can make my chin pop out like a frog and I reckon it’s the strongest muscle in my body no cap.

Keep up to date with Tulliah on Insta.
