Interview: Getting to know Zhuli

Sydney-based pop newcomer Zhuli has just revealed her debut track. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Zhuli. A pop singer/songwriter who loves to write songs.

‘IKEA’ is… a tongue in cheek anthem for knowing your self-worth and never settling. It’s a light-hearted diss for all the basics and a reminder to hype yourself up!

Home is… a guitar. Whenever I feel lost, music grounds me in its simplest form. Sometimes I feel imposter syndrome, or I get swept up by anxiety and forget why I do this. Sitting down with a guitar and singing a song that I love reminds me why I love what I do and makes the scariest problems seem manageable. No matter where I am or who surrounds me, I feel the most authentic version of myself in the few minutes of playing a song.

I spend too much time… on Tik Tok. I can’t even defend this; I’m just addicted. It’s even started to influence my songwriting in my head, rent-free.

I’ve never… released music properly before! So this will be my debut release, and I’m very excited, and nervous, but mainly excited.

It might surprise people to learn that… My mum was never okay with me playing contact sports… so I did music and pistol shooting.
