Juno Disco – House Of Juno EP track by track

Melbourne-based synth-pop duo Juno Disco have returned with their inventive new EP House Of Juno. They talk us through it, track by track:

Two Streets Over

Nick: This was the first track written for the EP and was the jumping-off point for taking Juno Disco into the house world for this release. It still has a lot of classic Juno Disco elements – squelchy synths, bright-summertime chords, but goes heavier and more electronic on the drums. In fact, I was so keen on the drums that I took the loop and used it to build track two…

Left To Write

Albert: This track is the emotional core of the EP. Nick came through with some beautiful lyrics, which I was fortunate enough to perform, and there’s some entertaining wordplay with the ‘Left To Write’. It’s a touching track while also being an absolute bop. I also get to go full Linkin Park/Jay Z on the sample pads when we play this live.

Neon Lights (feat. Leon Nites)

Nick: ‘Neon Lights’ is a heaving house cut, born of our deep longing for late nights and sweaty dancefloors. It features mythical nightclub legend Leon Nites, who loans his distinct booming voice and undeniable charisma to the track. As soon as lockdown is over, we plan to take this thing to every nightclub in Melbourne and blast it as loud as we can over the PA.

Don’t Be Fooled

Nick: The main groove of this track had been in a demos folder under the name ‘Italo 2’ for at least a year before the chorus was added. I love the mish-mash of influences – at first, it feels like pure 80s Italo-Disco, but the chorus almost feels like if Kevin Parker had produced a Scissor Sisters track; I hope it’s not too jarring!

Waiting So Long

Albert: This is probably as dark as we’ve gone with Juno. It’s a moody dark house track built around this ascending synth part, and bits and pieces come in and build on it. I get to go full Trent Reznor on my Model D clone by detuning the oscillators with each other, which I always love doing!

Dreamin’

Albert: Dreamin’ was the first single from the EP, which we released earlier in the year. We were very fortunate enough to kick it off with a packed show at The Leadbeater Hotel in between lockdowns. There’s a lot of rave vibe in this one, and our love of bands like Underworld influences it. Once again, when we play it live, I get to embrace my love of Linkin Park by playing the ‘Dreamin’ sample a la ‘Numb/Encore’.
