Interview: Getting to know Winifred

Townsville-based artist Winifred releases her debut body of work, EP1 today. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… eating vegetable tempura and getting spicy mayo on my keyboard as I type this. Oops. Currently on the cusp of releasing my first Winifred EP, feeling excited and grateful in general.

EP 1 is… My debut body of work! A reflection of the beginnings of Winifred and a subtle nod to where I’m heading next! This EP has been a transformative experience for me, from the writing and creative collaborations to the dance music videos I’ve been blessed to make. It’s all been very affirming for me as a creative and really solidified ‘who’ Winifred is.

Home is… Townsville. I know that even more now after spending the last 9 years down South and living on my own during too many lockdowns to count. I’m feeling very at peace in North Queensland with my friends and family close by. And of course there’s that iconic and ever-present Townsville humidity reminding you where you are at all times.

I spend too much time… in my head especially when it comes to finalising music! Sometimes I just need someone to tell me ’Stop!’.

I’ve never… cared what people think of me.. just kidding that’s a lie.

The last couple of years have been… partly like a hazy sun showered day dream, where memories feel blurred together but also at other times it’s been very focused, inspired and intense. That’s life isn’t it. Quiet then loud. Joyous then devastating. All things! The last couple of years have been marked by making some pretty big life choices, so I’ve been funnelling all of that experiential inspiration into my writing.
