Getting to know HI MOTIVE 

Eora/Sydney-based electronic duo HI MOTIVE have released their new single Stranger. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… two best mates that have spent the last few years just trying to make music that our friends would put on if they got handed the aux cord at a BBQ.

Stranger is… all about the emotion of defiance, removing yourself from something toxic and looking out for number one (a.k.a. you).

Home is… Launceston for Ed, and the Gold Coast for Matt. For two mates with a lot in common, we come from very different parts of Australia. But we’ve learned that our biggest difference is our feelings towards the ocean. Naturally, due to the idyllic Gold Coast beaches, Matt has always loved aquatic activities like ocean swims, snorkelling and scuba diving whereas in comparison, the Antarctic-level water temperatures boasted by Tasmania’s coastline has turned Ed off most ocean-related adventures.

We spend too much time… tweaking synth sounds. We’ll spend hours tweaking tiny fractions of knobs thinking it’s going to be ‘the difference’, only to get to the end and the average person wouldn’t even notice any difference. 

We’ve never… started a soundcheck on time.

It might surprise people to learn that… Matt can speak fluent Japanese. We travelled around Japan in 2019 with 9 of us mates, and Matt was the official translator for us everywhere we went. The rest of us just smiled and waved.
