Getting to Know Melaleuca

Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie four-piece Melaleuca have just unveiled their new single. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… Melaleuca from Brisbane, Australia. If you grew up in South-East Queensland, you might have had sports houses at your primary school named after native plant genus – mine was Banksia, Hovea, Melaleuca and Grevillea. I thought Melaleuca had the best ring to it.

Point of Normal is… a song about why your head doesn’t seem to work the same way as all the other people around you. Sometimes it feels like everyone has their shit together except you, and that might make you feel bad. You can vent your frustrations in the form of a song as I did, or you can seek professional help to assess whether you may not be as neurotypical as you think, which I also did.

Home is… watching the sunset on the Gabba from inside while the Lions are playing. There’s nothing better.

I spend too much time… researching (watching a million YouTube videos) on any product before I buy it. Cameras, music gear…even fibreglass insulation to build acoustic panels. I’ve researched ’em all.

I’ve never… seen a Fast and the Furious movie. I don’t know why this is. I’m too far gone to start now

It might surprise people to learn that…. JS Bach did not actually write the famous Minuet in G Major. Rather it is believed that it was written by Christian Petzold, who was an organist at the Sophienkirche in Dresden. Bach wrote it into a notebook for his wife, Anna Magdalena Bach, which was why it had previously been considered one of his compositions.
