Getting to Know Lucid Safari

Meanjin/Brisbane indie-rock outfit Lucid Safari have returned with their new single ‘Running’. We asked Dan from the band to tell us more:

We are… Lucid Safari, an indie rock band from Brisbane. We’re big on live energy, banter, and a good time. The best moments are when we’re locked in with the crowd – sweaty, loud, and laughing. It’s all about connection for us.

Running is… about trying to better yourself after a relationship that never really got the chance to work. It’s that thing where you become who you should’ve been all along, but the person you did it for will probably never see it. There’s a hint of hope in there, sure, but it’s mostly about acceptance. The chorus hits that fantasy of throwing it all on the line one last time, even though deep down you know it’s too late.

Home is… catching up with the boys in the band. We haven’t been on the road for a while, but that’s where we feel most like ourselves: no jobs, no pressure, just music and miles. Doesn’t matter if we’re playing to six people or six hundred, that’s where everything makes sense.

I spend too much time… overthinking whether I’m doing enough. I’ve got this constant tug-of-war between going all in on the dream or keeping things steady with work and gigs. I know I’ve got more to give, more to sacrifice, but finding the balance between chasing it and keeping my life together is the hard bit.

I’ve never… played a show completely sober. It’s tradition for us to have a shot of Jameson before every show. It’s like flicking a switch that says, “Alright, let’s go.” Plus, we never turn down free beer.

It might surprise people to learn that… I listen to audiobooks more than music. Music’s kind of my whole life, so sometimes I just need to switch off. I’m working through A Storm of Swords right now — it’s good to get lost in something entirely different for a while.

‘Running’ is available worldwide now.
