James Blake returns to Sydney with a rare Opera House Forecourt performance

There are artists who remind us of moments and memories. Then there are artists who seem to soundtrack our life as a whole movie.
For many listeners, James Blake has long occupied that second category. Across more than a decade of quietly shape-shifting releases, the British producer, songwriter and vocalist has built a catalogue that slips between fractured electronic production, sparse piano ballads, soul, R&B and experimental pop without ever feeling confined by any of them.
Now, after seven years away from Australian stages, Blake will return this summer for a headline performance on the Sydney Opera House Forecourt as part of the On The Steps concert series.
The show arrives in support of Trying Times. Characteristically introspective, the album continues his fascination with emotional liminality – examining intimacy, isolation and the uneasy realities of modern life.
Whether you first found Blake through the spectral pulse of “Limit To Your Love”, the aching vulnerability of “Retrograde”, the intricate beauty of Overgrown, or the collaborations that have seen him move effortlessly between underground electronic music and mainstream hip-hop, his live performances have always been defined by moving people deeply.
For me, James Blake was the soundtrack to contemporary dance classes where “I Mind” became almost inseparable from movement. Years later, his records became the albums I reached for in heartbreak to fill the void of companionship I so desperately ached for.
“You’re on your own / In a world you’ve grown…”
“Death of Love” continues to unearth places that feel both distant and strangely familiar – proof that Blake’s music has never simply documented grief, but found new ways to inhabit it. Against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour, those songs are likely to land with even greater resonance. Warm yourself up with the a track, Death of Love, off his new album Trying Times
