Getting to know Marlon Williams

marlon-williams

Melbourne-based New Zealand musician Marlon Williams has just released his first solo LP, which was recorded in his hometown of Lyttelton. We asked him to tell us a bit about himself:

I am Marlon Williams, Maori Welshman, choirboy in spurs. Christchurch-born, currently on loan to Melbourne. Lazy.

My debut album is called Marlon Williams, after me. It’s out digitally and on Compact Disc, to come out on vinyl very soon. It’s my first solo album but my fifth LP.

My tour in June/July is going to be with my band and Laura Jean. Laura Jean is actually the best songwriter going. Get to tackle some bigger venues too. Scary.

Lyttelton is the kind of place to raise your kids. There’s more wonderful music coming out of there per capita than anywhere I’ve been.

I spend too much time worrying about death, playing pool on my iPhone, scrolling through Facebook on my iPhone, scrolling through Instagram on my iPhone, scrolling through my iPhone, generally.

I am currently listening to Robbie Basho, incredible guitar virtuoso, mate of John Fahey’s. Very Eastern influenced, only sung on half-a-dozen tracks in his career but has a stunning stunning voice.

It might surprise people to learn that houseflies always buzz in the key of F. Isn’t that surprising?!

You can catch Marlon on tour at the following venues, if you happen to be in NZ/Aus:

Thursday June 25 – Bodega, Wellington, NZ
Friday June 26 – Crystal Palace, Auckland, NZ
Saturday June 27 – Isaac Theatre Royal, Christchurch, NZ
Sunday June 28 – Chicks Hotel, Dunedin, NZ
Thursday July 2 – Jive, Adelaide SA
Friday July 3 – Corner Hotel, Melbourne VIC
Saturday July 4 – The Basement, Sydney NSW
Sunday July 5 – Bello Winter Festival, Bellingen NSW
Tuesday July 7 – The Foundry, Brisbane QLD
