Getting to Know Emma Anglesey

Emma Anglesey is back with a typically striking new single and album. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Emma. I live in a small town called Launceston on an island at the bottom on the world called Tasmania. I’ve travelled and lived in big cities like New York City, San Francisco, London, Melbourne and Sydney but I love being surrounded by nature and having plenty of time to make music, and here is perfect for that. I have Christine and the Queens’ record Chaleur Humaine on repeat right now and I’m learning to speak French so it’s great for practicing Alliance Francais. My favourite new music video right now is Childish Gambino’s This Is America because it’s so subversive and it’s been filmed in a continuous take, a video technique that I absolutely love. You can find this music and other stuff that I’ve been listening to through my Spotify and Apple Music pages.

Swells My Heart is… one of the first offerings from my new record Some Things Can’t Be Undone. The record was produced by Joshua Barber (Gotye) and recorded at his studio The Barbershop in Melbourne. The song is about being shocked by an all-consuming passion that’s totally over taken you in spite of reason. It celebrates feeling out of control because of the biochemistry pumping through your veins. It’s been a dream of mine for a while to shoot an entire film clip in one single take and I’m excited to have made one for this song. The paintings of the renaissance were obsessed with irrational moments fuelled by passion; the fall in Eden and the serpent, the triumph of Judith over the armies of Kings, the beauty that overthrew David in the moonlight. This video clip takes inspiration from the artwork of this era.

My upcoming tour will be… worth getting off Netflix for. Honestly. You should totally come to one of the shows. There will be singing, dancing and a full band (except Canberra and Callala Bay – sorry guys you just get my guitarist Yyan and I).

Home is… with the people you love and when you’re immersed in your favourite playlist.

I spend too much time… listening to music. It’s totally self indulgent but I love to spend hours lying in my room or on the floor of my studio listening to my favourite albums from start to finish.

I’ve never… tried drugs. I just don’t feel the need to. Also I have an anaphylactic allergy to codeine and paracetamol and I don’t want to find out what else I’m allergic to or run into those chemicals in places I don’t expect.

It might surprise people to learn that… I’m a retired dancer. Well maybe not after they watch my new film clip ;o) Ha! I began my professional dancing career when I was 4 years old on the Humphry B Bear TV show. I’m not even joking. By the time I was 13 I had toured with the theatre production Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and at 14 I was a backing jazz dancer for James Morrison. I was in the middle of a big show in Melbourne when I epically injured my back and I couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. That was really tough and I didn’t want to go through something similar again so I decided to retire and focus on my other artistic passion of making music. Music was what got me through that experience and that’s why I think that making songs and music is so important for people and the world. I’m so glad that I made that decision and now I’m really excited about bringing my love of dance back into my film clips and live shows.
