Interview: Skegss get introspective

Skegss release their debut album, My Own Mess, this Friday and are touring Australia throughout October and November. Cherry Anna Brearley had a chat with all three members of the band for Something You Said:

HELLO SKEGSS. How are you, where are you, how’s your week been?

Skeg 1: We’re hanging out in a pub in Sydney right now, in Surry Hills, before we fly back to Byron later on. We were on TV yesterday, and then shooting the new video. Then we were really tired… and we’d had a few beers… so we went to the minimart and bought some crackers and cheese which I melted in the microwave in the studio for snacks. Actually they tasted burned as all hell. Hang on… I can see a girl out of the window on the phone from where I’m sitting. IS IT YOU???

Errrr… no.

Skeg 1: Are you sure??

Um, yes.

…Anyway…

Moving on…

I’m going to theme my next couple of questions based on your top 4 most listened to tracks on Spotify if that’s cool. Here we go…

LSD | When was the last time you took LSD and what happened?

Collective Skegss: ***Long Pause***

Skeg 1: None of us have ever done it. Have you done acid before?

Skeg 2: Nah. I don’t think I could handle it. I’m a bit crazy anyway… I don’t really think I need it. I did take an…. unknown substance… at one point and walked into a room, then saw myself walking into the room again and again and again. That was on some sort of mind-altering shit. But the song really isn’t about taking LSD per se…

Nicely navigated. Okay so, song 2’s called Up in the Clouds. You’re gonna be up in the clouds pretty frequently shortly owing to the upcoming ‘My Own Mess’ tour. Are you super excited? What are you most looking forward to about your trip and what’s on your rider?

Skeg 2: We are really excited to start touring, especially with our supports Twin Peaks, who we haven’t even met yet, but hear are a really cool bunch of dudes. We’re so stoked that so many of the shows are all sold out and to be playing in the biggest venues we’ve ever played. We’ve got a whole new setlist and tonnes of songs we’re gonna be debuting from the new album for the first time live. As for the rider… we usually get a bottle of Jameson, two boxes of beer, two boxes of vodka and a couple of bottles of JDL.

What the hell is JDL? Do you always finish that amount of booze, night after night after night?

Skeg 3: Oh, it’s like… it’s like a premixed vodka drink. And yeah we ordinarily always finish it, it’s never been a problem for us before…

Maybe you should start asking for more and up the ante a bit. Anyway, on to song 3: ‘Spring Has Sprung’… What’s next for you this spring/summer after your tour closes?

Skeg 1: We pretty much go on tour until the middle of December, so we’re touring all through Spring. Then we’re going to England, and when we come we’ll probably just keep writing songs and look forward towards…. whatever. Probably making new albums – demos, whatever songs working on new stuff as we go along or whatever. Demoing some tunes and keepin’ on doin’ it.

Is that how you put together the album, just kind of working on things and not planning anything? Tell me more about the new record…

Skeg 2: Err…. what can I say…ITS GOT THE BEST SONGS EVERrrrrrrRRRrrrr! Haha. Nah. It’s just… it’s the most honest thing we’ve ever made in terms of the fact all the songs encapsulate the year that we had last year. We are just real happy with how it’s turned out, it’s the best, most… introspective stuff we’ve ever put together.

Got on my Skateboard | If you had a magical skateboard, that could literally skate you anywhere in the known universe, where would you go. Also the skateboard travels through time.

Skeg 2: Cairns. Definitely Cairns.

Skeg 1+3: ***Silence***

I truly thought there would be a more interesting answer to that question, but there we go. Anyway, we’re nearing the end of our chat now. What else do you want to tell the people of the world about?

Skeg 2: I just… I’ve been really into gardening lately. I just find it relaxing and I’ve been well into it. I’ve got some banana trees, and just heaps of passionfruit trees that my girlfriend looks after whilst we’re away on tour. It’s just awesome.

Rad. Well my angels it’s been an absolutely pleasure. Good luck in the pub today and look forward to seeing you touring the new record. Bye now!

Collective Skegss: BYYEEEEEEEEEE CHERRYYYYYYYY
