Getting to know Georgia Mae

Georgia Mae has recently released her new video, ‘Girl Next Door’. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Georgia. My middle name is Mae so I go by Georgia Mae. My favourite colour is blue, my favourite number is 8 and my favourite food is Thai/Italian/Vietnamese/Mexican/Indonesian/Japanese/Indian/ice cream. I live in Los Angeles but grew up in Australia. I’ve been making music since I was four and don’t imagine I’ll ever stop.

Girl Next Door is… a song about falling for someone. When you’re spiralling, everything’s so dreamy and exciting and it almost feels like you’re starring in some 90s rom-com…but it’s also such a natural, common occurrence which makes it all the more mysterious. I just love it and wanted to write a song that matched in intensity. And I’ve always liked how the phrase ‘girl next door’ can evoke something so nostalgic/enigmatic/romantic, but at the same time, put those feelings into an ‘everyday’ kind of context. Production-wise, I had a pretty ‘go hard or go home’ mentality; I set out for this to be a pop song through and through so it was fun to push some of my own boundaries and take a few risks.

Home is… Australia. In my parent’s house in Brisbane with my sister and our cats and dogs. Over the past two years I’ve been fortunate enough to call both San Francisco and Los Angeles home, and who knows where else in the future, but Australia will always be my one and only. The people, the weather, the culture, the beaches, the animals, the rainforests, the outback and the coffee have shaped the core of my identity.

I spend too much time… in traffic.

I’ve never… watched Keeping Up With The Kardashians even though I write music for it #confession

It might surprise people to learn that… I’ve been a competitive swimmer for most of my life. I did sound design on Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War while working at Skywalker Sound last year. I broke my back in January. I’ve got a degree in Music Technology. I hate bananas with a passion. I’m a classically-trained pianist. I’ve been caught sleeping with my eyes open on more than one occasion. Over 60 million girls worldwide are denied education.

In the future… I hope I can be as cool as my mum.

Keep up to date with Georgia on Facebook.
