Interview: Getting To Know Helga

Swedish artist Helga has just released a brand new track ‘Battle Song’. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Helga, from Sweden. I live in a tiny cabin in Dalarna where I create music. I love living here, very peaceful and close to the forest where I can easily check out trees, insects, mushrooms, squirrels, birds. Almost no human beings. 🙂 I tend to have pine cones and a book in my pocket or bag. It feels safe to have them around. Bananinha is a new favourite candy of mine, but unfortunately it only exists in Brazil. I barely listen to other music ever since I started writing my own music, but when I do it’s Russian choral music and some folk, classical, black and death metal. I may not make super heavy music, but it really inspires me. Opeth is one of my favourite bands ever. When I saw them last year I headbanged and shed tears at the same time. How brutal could one be?

Battle Song is… a song I wrote inspired by medieval folk music, and it is mixed in Brazil by Luiz Felipe Netto of the progressive death metal band Piah Mater and Loneshore. I think I’d prefer the listener to have his or her own interpretation of the song, so I’d rather not say too much.

Home is… where your heart is.

I spend too much time… thinking, feeling and writing music.

It might surprise people to learn that… I cried over a bad fika. It was really bad and disappointing, I had to cry it all out. I also cried listening to some good black metal music. A friend of mine thought it was funny, but I guess I’m just an emotional mushroom girl. I also enjoy dancing very much. I had a few dance lessons back in the days, and had the chance to play a role in a musical – which meant me singing and dancing at the same time. I really had a good time.

In the future… I’d like to write more songs, play more shows and save the Earth.

Keep up to date with Helga on Facebook.
