Something You Said’s top songs of 2018

We asked our contributors to vote for their favourite tunes from the last 12 months. Here’s what they selected:

1. ALEX THE ASTRONAUT – HAPPY SONG

It’s been quite a year for Alex The Astronaut. She’s sung onstage with Paul Kelly, sold out shows in Australia and on the other side of the world, delivered amazing festival performances and released this beautiful single. Anyone who has seen her live will have enjoyed a good ol’ singalong to this. We can’t wait to see what 2019 brings.

2. SOPHIE – IMMATERIAL

The most joyous rush of pure pop released this year. Absolutely bonkers innovative avant pop. Madonna twisted and filtered through a permanently glitching Moebius loop.

3. HOLIDAY SIDEWINDER – LEO

What a tune, what a video! In Leo, US-based Australian, Holiday Sidewinder, has delivered a slice of saucy, infectious pop genius. Magnificent!

4. CHILDISH GAMBINO – THIS IS AMERICA

450 million Youtube hits later, Donald Glover’s powerful offering still feels as vital and relevant as it did the first time it hit our eyes and ears.

5. ANGIE MCMAHON – MISSING ME

“It’s an angrysad pop song,” Angie told us when we interviewed her. “I used to feel a bit juvenile, singing the lyric ”you’d better be missing me”, but now I like it. I try to be mature and level-headed in real life (usually) but onstage I can sing a song like this and unapologetically be a drama queen, and that’s a nice treat.”

6. LET’S EAT GRANDMA – HOT PINK

7. THE INTERNET – STAY THE NIGHT

8. ANDERSON .PAAK (FT KENDRICK LAMAAR) – TINTS

9. ST VINCENT – FAST SLOW DISCO

10. RUBY GILL – YOUR MUM
