The Great Escape 2019 line-up: Our hot picks so far

We’re excited that May is coming around soon, because that’s when our favourite UK festival by an absolute mile takes place. Yup, Brighton’s Great Escape always delivers three brilliant days of music and conferences, and this year will surely be no exception, as emerging acts from around the world will converge on the South East of England, to play in every nook and cranny the city has to offer. If you’ve been before, you know the score. If you’ve never been, then get your backside down to Brighton and discover your new favourite group. Last year’s highlights for us included watching Stella Donnelly perform on the beach, the brilliant Self Respect (pictured, above) upstairs in a pub and The Spook School at the end of the pier.

The full line-up has yet to be released, but what has been announced already is mighty fine. Here are our hot picks so far.

Cable Ties

Smashing punk, kraut and boogie together, the three friends from Melbourne summon a rhythmic tide to deliver anthems that turn latent anxieties into a rallying cry. Do not miss.

Self Esteem

Rebecca Taylor, formerly of Slow Club, blew us away at last year’s Great Escape as, flanked by two backing vocalists, she busted out some sweet dance moves and true killer tunes.

The Jungle Giants

The Brisbane four-piece are beloved in Australia. Their latest record, Quiet Ferocity, has received critical acclaim and sold by the truckload.

Millie Turner

A couple of years back, this kid from Hackney ditched her paintbrush and headed into the recording studio instead. Check her out in Brighton and then brag to your mates in a few years about how you saw her when she was an 18-year-old just starting out.

Tropical Fuck Storm

Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin of The Drones join up with Lauren Hammel and Erica Dunn to make some abrasive yet undeniably catchy psychedelic Aussie sludge punk. What’s not to love?

Lucia

We saw this stylish bunch from Glasgow at last year’s Great Escape, and they left us mighty impressed, so we’re predicting that, with another year’s experience under their belts, they’re gonna be even better.

The Great Escape takes place between Thursday May 9 2019 and Saturday May 11 2019. You can buy tickets here and see the full line-up here.
