Interview: Getting to Know Nelipot

Central Coast-based indie-dance trio Nelipot just released their new single. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

I am… Benjamin Day, I’m the drummer in Nelipot. But like, I’m also the accommodation booker, van driver, gear packer, and all round best lad in the band.

Garden Hose Rainbows is… our latest release. It’s a song about the ordinary and average things in our personal lives and kind of observes how we (as people in general) either accept the mundane or reject it in hopes of something ‘greater’. It’s something we all feel, yeah? Like, it can be a little bit shit trying to accept the insignificance of our experiences in the grand scheme of things but it can also be real liberating, a proper big breath of fresh air when you submit yourself to the idea that happiness is not synonymous with ‘big’ achievements and it can be found in the most average and insignificant of circumstances.

Home is… the Central Coast, somewhere between Terrigal Beach and Point Clare. It’s with good company, good music, and good drinks. It’s honestly magic.

I spend too much time… working on my van, might sell her, we’ll see. It’s either that or on the M1/Hume Highways on our way to shows, which we do in my van. So yeah, I’ve gotta say I spend way, way too much time in and around that van.

I’ve never… been a fan of night clubs, I like live music venues and pubs and bars and all that. But I don’t think nightclubs are my scene. I love people and I’m always up for a drink but yeah, they aren’t for me.

It might surprise people to learn that… it’s not that easy to coordinate a band when you’re all students and working part time and have other lives and are trying to become an adult. It’s actually pretty hard. We all have uni, jobs, and personal lives to juggle while trying to make a career out of music and might I say, it is not easy. The longer we do this, the more and more impressed we have all become at our friends and peers that we’ve seen being able to move to creative work full time. It really is a hard earned privilege to be able to survive on your art and we can’t wait to get there.
