Interview: Getting to know BOLEYN

Sydney-based queer-pop artist BOLEYN has just unveiled his new single ‘re: 21’. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am… Brent, aka BOLEYN. I’m a 23-year-old third culture kid from Cronulla Beach, who writes melancholy pop in his bedroom.

re: 21 is… about the anxieties of youth and the distractions we use move through them. One thing I’ve learned (learnt?) is that, no matter what you’re going through, someone out there is going through the same thing. So I wrote a song full of all the deepest darkest things I was most afraid for people to hear, hoping other people felt the same things.

Home is… where I’m loved. I was born overseas and moved to Australia when I was about 4 years old, so I never really had a big family vibe. There’s a certain disconnect that comes with being a first generation immigrant, you eventually learn to make your own family, out of the people who love & inspire you.

I spend too much time… overthinking, I could do it professionally.

I’ve never… felt comfortable being vulnerable, but that’s changing. The process of writing this song, and the EP more generally, really helped open myself up and grow comfortable in showing people the inner workings of my mind.

It might surprise people to know… I’m a fully qualified solicitor! Shout out to HECS for making it possible.
