Getting to know Gyroscope’s Rob Nassif

Rob Nassif is departing Gyroscope after more than 20 years. We asked him to tell us about himself and the band:

I am… Rob Nassif, the soon to be former drummer of Gyroscope. After a 23-year run, I’ve decided to step away to focus on band management. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make as Gyroscope has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of my life, but I’m also excited about what’s next. I currently manage two bands, The Faim who are currently on a 45-date world tour, and RedHook who are fast becoming one the most exciting heavy bands in Australia.

4YRLV is… a song that encapsulates everything I love about Gyro. Screamy vocals, with great pop sensibility melodies. It’s going to be a fun one to play live on the upcoming tour. It’s also one of those songs that came together pretty quickly in the studio, which always gets my vote.

Home is… New York City. I’ve lived here on and off for the past 5 years and really love it. When Gyroscope decided to take a year off in 2013, the wife and I decided to give it a try and we’ve never looked back. Brearne my wife is a producer for a reality TV show called ‘Love After Lock Up’. The Faim is signed to BMG and they’ve given me a desk in their office over here. I love the energy of this city; every day feels like a new adventure.

I spend too much time… contemplating on what’s next, when in reality I should stop and smell the roses a little more. When I look back on Gyro, I sometimes think I didn’t spend enough time celebrating the successes as I was always worried if we’d keep writing great songs. I’m always encouraging the bands I manage to celebrate every small victory.

I’ve never… thanked Dan, Zok and Brad enough for their talent. As I have become older, I can really appreciate just how lucky I was to be surrounded by the 3 talented musicians. I learnt an awful lot from these guys and apply those principles every day. I also respect their work ethic so much, it’s actually one of the things I am proudest of Gyroscope, there wasn’t too many bands when we were coming up that worked harder.

It might surprise people to learn that… I’m a big runner. Running and Rock n Roll don’t always fit together, but it’s really my meditation. I try and run around 40 km a week, Most Saturdays I go for a 20 km run with buddies and chew the fat. I’ve run the NY Marathon twice with a best time of 3hr24m.
