Our top ten tunes of the week – July 31

These are the songs that have been getting us going over the past seven days:

1. Kitty Liv – This Lovely London Summer Time

The much-anticipated debut solo release by Kitty Liv (of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis fame) has finally arrived. It’s a paean to the summertime and to Kentish Town in North London, where Kitty was born and bred. We love this!

2. Laura Marling – Fortune

This song is from Laura’s recent album, Song For Our Daughter, which made the 2020 Mercury Prize Shortlist. Commenting on the record’s nomination, Laura said: “Releasing the record as the world turned itself upside down felt quite disconcerting. It still feels odd now, but in what has been such an unusual year, this comes as a nice surprise.”

3. Disclosure – Douha (Mali Mali)

The duo have dropped the latest track to be lifted from their forthcoming album, ENERGY, out 28 August. This one features, once again, the vocal talents of Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara.

4. Carmen ModjitoHouse is on Fire

This song was written before the devastating Australian bushfires, and in the aftermath Modjito says, “We must act as if every action we take, everything we purchase, and every vote we make impacts on our future and the future of our children — because it does.”

5. The Lemon Twigs – No One Holds You Closer (Than The One You Haven’t Met)

Upcoming album Songs For The General Public will be released on 21 August 2020 and also features previous singles ‘Live In Favor Of Tomorrow’, ‘Moon’ and ‘The One’.

6. romæo – revealed

The Sydney artist’s debut single was inspired by Titian’s artwork ’Sacred and Profane Love’. The painting details two versions of Venus having a conversation with each other, so the song is a musing on what the women would be talking about.

7. Nicky William – I Fell in Love with Her

Directed by Claudio Marino, the video for the Swedish artist’s new song portrays Nicky as a ghostlike figure, who fails to be recognised by his love interest.

8. Octavian – Rari (Chapter 1) feat. Future

The multifaceted London rapper, producer and songwriter drops his highly-anticipated debut album this year. Here’s the first track from it.

9. Life On Planets & Taylor Bense – Glowstick

The Baltimore producer / singer / musician Phil Celeste teamed up with Brooklyn electronic artist Taylor Bense for this new single, which is lifted from their forthcoming EP due later this year. This is the pair’s first collaboration.

10. Georgie – Chasing Kites

The Mansfield singer-songwriter is set to drop her new studio album, At Home, in a couple of weeks. Here’s a taste.
