Interview: Getting to know Happy.

USA-based pop-punk trio Happy. have just released their new single ‘A Cure For Wellness’. We asked lead singer Tate Logan to tell us more:

We are… a three-piece emo pop band called Happy. My name is Tate Logan and I sing and play rhythm guitar. I am joined by my two best friends, Sean on drums and John on lead guitar. Our music is punk, it’s pop, it’s emo, it’s rock and we almost always have a little hint of “surf” in there. We write really upbeat and catchy songs that have pretty intense lyrical content most of the time. Our band name is ironic. We are trying our best to be Happy. But that’s something we have to work on, one day at a time, and there is no formula to it. We encourage our fans to do the same. Set your own goals, don’t compare yourself to anyone else’s success. It’s all relative, so our message is to stick to your true self, dive into your passions, and don’t let anyone get in the way of that. You’ll find your own success that way faster than trying to be someone else.

A Cure For Wellness is… a song that taught me a big lesson. When I wrote the song, I thought I was writing a song about being angry and frustrated with someone I loved for all of the stress and heartbreak that comes with struggling with addiction. However, since the song has been recorded and I’ve had time to listen and reflect, I realise now that I was writing the song about myself. I was angry with myself for not doing more, not helping more, not listening more. But most of all, I was disappointed in myself for enabling him. Thankfully in the time since the song was written, my loved one has sought help and is doing incredibly better. I love him so much and I am so proud of him. And I know now how to be there for him in times like that. He taught me so much.

Home is… the beach. I grew up in Beaufort, SC. A tiny town that is made up of over 65 islands! It is completely surrounded by beautiful water, wildlife and palm trees. It also has a lot of history in the architecture and homes. I didn’t appreciate it when I was growing up. I hated my hometown just like any other angsty teenager. However, I have travelled all over the entire country now, and have realised that my hometown is one of the most beautiful places in the US. It completely changed my outlook on my childhood. I was really lucky to have so much beauty around me every single day. I grew up seeing sea turtles, dolphins, sailboats and sand every other day and had no idea how unique that was until I grew up and moved away. I spent a few years in Columbia to get my degree, and now live in Charlotte, NC.

I spend too much time… watching horror movies. I’m pretty sure that I have seen every single American horror movie from 1960 up until now. I’m not joking, one time my fiancé and I found a list of “1000 under horror movies” and we laughed for hours because we had seen every. single. one. It’s kind of a ritual honestly. We watch a horror movie or two every single night. We’ve been together for 8 years, that’s a lot of horror movies haha. We’ve started watching foreign films now! I have a few tattoos that nod to movies like The Shining and Psycho. My favourite horror directors are Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. I recommend watching Resolution and The Endless back to back if you’re looking for new and absolutely fantastic cosmic horror films. I also own every single Silent Hill game. Horror games are amazing too.

I’ve never… been as grateful as I am right now. I want to say THANK YOU to every person that has ever listened to our music, bought a vinyl, T-shirt, or came out to a show. We are constantly being blown away by our fans. You guys bring us gifts, get tattoos of our lyrics, make us beautiful art, stand in line for shows hours before doors open… It’s incredible and humbling. We wouldn’t be able to do this without the fans and we want them to know how much we love and appreciate them. Also, thank you for reading this interview!

It might surprise people to learn that… all 3 of us have degrees! I have a degree in Entertainment Management and Broadcast Journalism. Sean has a Business degree and John has an Accounting degree. We may dress like punks and act like punks, but we do know a couple of things! People are usually surprised to learn this about us. We are proud of ourselves for getting a good education while still managing to put the music and band first.

Keep up to date with the band on Insta.
