Getting to know Second Idol

Sydney-based alternative-rock trio Second Idol have just revealed their debut single, White Noise. We asked Kate Olivia from the band to tell us more:

Second Idol are… Theia Joyeaux, Maxine Gillon and I. We were formerly known as Bruise Pristine and had a little rebirth into Second Idol. We’re a bunch of people who like making loud menacing music and take joy in fuzz pedals and excessive guitar feedback. We draw upon grunge, alternative rock and post-punk influences and create visceral guitar music that might give you tinnitus.

‘White Noise’ is…  a reaction to misogyny and the policing of women’s and gender non-conforming bodies. It emerged out of my observations of comments often made by cis men on social media. It an accumulation of anger in response to strangers making unsolicited comments on one’s body autonomy, and this commentary then becoming constant background noise to living an authentic life.

Home is… that feeling you get after you laugh about something really stupid and have a giddy feeling of contentment… and Inner Western Sydney.

I spend too much time… living in the past and re-imagining situations where I lacked control. I blame my anxiety, and I’m working on focusing on what I can do now, and in the future, which will impact positively on myself and others.

I’ve never… been to Sri Lanka, where my mother is from. She left for England when she was 16, and then immigrated to Australia in the 70s. Most of her family left Sri Lanka during the civil war in the 80s – 00s. I’d love to visit to see where my mum grew up and connect her stories to physical places.

It might surprise people to learn that… I used to be a Soprano One in choral singing. I used to sing in traditional type choirs and at church. I was really shy and never wanted to be heard above the choir. My voice has definitively dropped down a bit since I was a teenager, and I don’t sing much about Jesus anymore…
