Getting to know Before the King

Sydney-based garage-rock act Before the King have just released their new single, Fast Machine. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… Before the King – the best damn opening band in the world.

Fast Machine is… quite a good song if we do say so ourselves. Who doesn’t love catchy lyrics and grizzly tones? Something to get stuck in your head, bringing joy and wonder to the mundane.

Home is… wherever the four of us are together, whether in our rehearsal space, on stage or just hanging out. Unless you’re asking about location, in which case it’s the gritty streets of Sydney’s inner west.

We spend too much time… on hair maintenance. As a result, our hair is the one beast we may never truly conquer.

We wrote Fast Machine… back in 2015. At that time, our writing process consisted of someone presenting an idea to the band and then the rest of the band following suit until a song fell out of us. So ‘Fast Machine’ was created when our bassist, Dan, fiddled with the volume knobs on his bass.

We weren’t… so much drawn to Indie Rock as much as it was just the sound that organically made when we began to write music. What followed was a deep cult-like obsession that has lasted to this day.

We’ve never… not played ‘Fast Machine’ at one of our shows. At times you can hear our supportive fans scream, “Play that Fast Machine one”.

It might surprise people to learn that… ‘Fast Machine’ was one of the first songs we ever wrote. Back in 2015, still in school, we performed ‘Fast Machine’ in front of the whole school. Looking back on that performance, some things have changed, and some have stayed the same and ain’t that the truth, brother.
