Getting to know Banjo Lucia

Fremantle-based Banjo Lucia releases her debut EP Peccadilloes today. We asked her to tell us about herself:

Peccadilloes is… an EP that is essentially me turning myself inside out and then sharing it with the world. It’s quite potentially the scariest thing I’ve ever done. A peccadillo is by definition ‘a relatively minor fault or sin’ and I like to think of this EP as a little bag of small secrets and mini musings that you can look through if you want to. Also ‘peccadilloes’ is really fun to say.

Home is… a repurposed shed in South Fremantle that isn’t insulated at all and is filled with the most chaotic collection of shit but is my favourite place on the planet. At home, I’m surrounded by stolen street signs, treasure from verge side pickup, an untuned piano, an obnoxiously loud kettle and strategically placed scarves covering piles of junk I don’t want to think about. It’s as close to a human birds nest as you can get (it also has a real birds nest inside it) and I love it so much.

I spend too much time… pretending I’m in a movie. I have multiple playlists dedicated to making any situation feel like it’s a part of a montage and I use them embarrassingly frequently.

I’ve never… eaten chicken parmigiana, watched or read Lord of the Rings, been stung by a bee, figured out how to unlock a door with a key gracefully, learned to play the banjo, confidently recited the months of the year in order and I’ve never released an EP before.

The last couple of years have been… I hate to say this but, transformative. I know that’s such a generic answer but two years ago I was in the heat of ATAR exam stress and now I’m typing out these answers sitting in the car on the way to do my first opening set on Stella Donnelly’s national tour which is just fucking insane to me.
