Getting to know Jordan Briton
Meanjin/Brisbane-based alternative pop/R&B artist Jordan Briton has released his new single, make it so easy, featuring JUNO. We asked him to tell us about himself:
I am… Jordan Briton. I’m a Filipino-Australian RnB and Soul artist from Brisbane/Meanjin, QLD. I was born in Florida, USA and moved to Australia with my mum and younger brother when I was 5 years old.
When… Sam/Kahlia (JUNO) and I were showing each other songs in the studio, I showed them my original demo for ‘make it so easy’ and they loved the sound of it. We ended up finishing the track together. Sam added his amazing production layers and Kahlia, her soulful verses and harmonies. It was quite an organic process.
Home is… big family get-togethers that include a lot of homemade Filipino food, karaoke, and party games. It’s a house filled with noisy family members making inside jokes (that only you and your fam would get), loud R&B jams pumping, and it’s just a warm place where everyone can be themselves. As I get older, the more I appreciate these family moments.
I spend too much time…playing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. Imma nerd out here for a second! I have always been a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda series, ever since I was a kid (Ocarina of Time). The latest Zelda game is phenomenal and I have not stopped playing it! It’s one of my few hobbies aside from music and it genuinely helps me relax and escape for a couple of hours when I need to.
I’ve never… been to London, but would absolutely love to visit and see all my favourite artists perform live including Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch, and Bruno Major.
It might surprise people to learn that… I can barely read music. Growing up, I learned how to play songs by ear. For better or worse, I was a little lazy with music theory through traditional methods of pen and paper. For me, the faster I could translate what I was hearing to my fingers, the faster I could play any song. I found my own relative understanding of the guitar and I’m forever a student of the craft.
