Interview: Getting to know CHISEKO

Perth artist CHISEKO has just dropped his new single, Outside. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am… a hip hop/hip-house/funk house artist from Boorloo, Perth, born in Zimbabwe, raised in Perth and in the UK.

2023 has so far been… busy! I’m feeling pretty burnt out at the moment. I’ve spent a majority of the year recording my ep and playing shows around the country. It’s super tiring but also super rewarding, I’ve always dreamt to be able to travel and work on music and I’m starting to see it come into fruition.

My single Outside is… a fun track about being intoxicated on a night out and driving around with your friends. I think to me the song feels like movement and that’s really what we tried to paint with the instrument choices and lyrics. It’s meant to feel moody, euphoric weaving in between fast and slow moments like you’re driving around with your head hanging out of the window.

Home is… everywhere, I feel like a global citizen. I was born in Zimbabwe, spent most of my childhood in the UK, spent some time in Switzerland and now live here in Australia. I feel like my identity isn’t distinctly linked to one place and I hope to express that in my music.

I spend too much time… sleeping.

I’ve never… watched an episode of The Wiggles…
