Something You Said’s top films of 2023

It will go down as the year of Barbenheimer, and there were plenty of other gems that captured our team’s imaginations as well. Here are the top ten, as voted for by the SYS contributors:

1. Past Lives

The Morning Show’s Greta Lee is magnificent in is quietly devastating directorial debut from playwright Celine Song.

Unmissable, and heartbreaking.

2. Barbie

Ryan Gosling is just Ken, and Aussie legend Margot Barbie is equally magnificent as Barbie.

An absolute triumph.

3. Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s epic might be three hours long, but we wanted more by the end.

Robert Downey Jr is incredible, as is Emily Blunt and lead-man Cillian Murphy.

4. Bottoms

A brilliant comedy, focusing on two unpopular best friends who start a high school fight club to meet girls.

They soon find themselves in way over their heads.

5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Brooklyn’s friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, amid awesome sound and visuals.

Just as inventive as the first one, and just as good.

6. Rye Lane

Whilst some of our team are from SW London, it wasn’t just them that voted for this Brixton-based film.

This lovely little story had the wit and humour to charm everyone, regardless of location.

7. Theatre Camp

When a theatre camp in upstate New York finds itself in dire financial straits, clueless tech-bro Troy arrives to run the property.

This lives in the Best In Show, Mighty Wind, and Spinal Tap universe.

=8. The Fabelmans

Semi-autobiographical and fully brilliant.

Steven Spielberg’s coming-of-age drama follows young Sammy Fabelman, who falls in love with movies.

=8. Killers Of The Flower Moon

Based on real events, Martin Scorsese’s latest movie clocks in at a bum-numbing 3 hours and 26 minutes. But it’s worth it.

10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

This animated adventure was more than just a trip back to our childhoods. Like Spider-Verse, it’s made with a genuine love of the characters.

Cowabunga, dudes.
