Big Vacation shares five influences

Eora/Sydney-based indie-pop artist Big Vacation has shared his debut single Anchor Point. To celebrate, he has shared some of his influences with us:

I love a lot of music from different times and genres, so to coincide with my cover of Radiohead- Climbing up the Walls, here are five artists and songs that influence Big Vacation.

Radiohead- Climbing up the Walls: The first Radiohead record I heard was ‘The Bends’ which had me wrapped around their finger immediately, with the dark pop driven by guitars and York’s voice. Then ‘OK Computer’ landed, and it was game over. I swear there is a little bit of that record in almost everything I make, in one way or another. It melts my mind every time I listen to it.

Veruca Salt- Seether: In a similar vein to ‘Cannonball’, Veruca Salt’s 1994 hit ‘Seether’ blew me away when it hit my ears. Those crunchy guitars, how it opens up in the chorus and those simple chord progressions are spot on. It definitely defines a couple of years of my life at some point.

NOFX- Linoleum: I could have chosen dozens of NOFX songs, but I had to go with the old faithful, ‘Linoleum’, simply because, in my humble opinion, it’s one of the best (pop) punk songs ever. From the opening guitar, the harmonic choices, and the fact it’s about 2 minutes long, NOFX are the greatest to ever do it. I think I listen to NOFX at least a couple of times a week to this day.

The Beastie Boys- Ill Communication: I am mentioning the whole record here because this was one of the moments that I realised how genres and styles can work together successfully. I didn’t see them tour until ‘Hello Nasty’, but this album changed my life, and I have my older brother to thank (for a lot of my musical influences too).

Powfu- Sleeping on the Floor: I’m a huge fan of Powfu. His lo-fi style has so much to admire, and he does it his way which I love. This song has simple elements with production textures that keep drawing me back. It’s also only 2 and a half minutes, which I think is cool.
