Interview: Getting to know Linying

We asked Singaporean indie-electronic pop artist Linying to tell us about herself, ahead of her performances at Bigsound:

I am… Linying, a singer and songwriter. I often travel, but I’ve spent most of my life in Singapore, where the people are stressed but the food is best.

Paycheck is… a song about admitting defeat and accepting that there will, after all, be two versions of the same truth. These versions will forever exist side by side, yet they diverge at every angle. It’s a hard realisation to overcome and to accept that you’re losing the collective memory and version of the truth that you once worked so hard to build together. I see it as a kind of labour that’s gone to waste, hence the title of the song.

My upcoming show at BIGSOUND will be… banging with feels. Being on stage always feels like a review or an affirmative summary of everything that’s made these songs come into existence. It solidifies my account of events that have happened, because I’m passing them on to an audience.

Home is… where the water doesn’t taste weird.

I spend too much time… overthinking and binge-watching The Bachelor to counter it.

I’ve never… met a cat I didn’t like.

It might surprise people to learn that… they can get me to do almost anything if they bribe me with the right food at the right time. My cravings control me.
