Our top ten tunes of the week – October 19

Here are the songs that have been getting us going over the past few days:

1. Meg Mac – Give Me My Name Back

“Most of my songwriting is an expression of how I feel; Standing up and saying no I find hard to do – it’s still something I struggle with,” Meg Mac explains. “I get so many messages from girls in response to my songs, who know exactly what I’m talking about and feel the same way – this is a song for everyone who has lost an important part of themselves, which they need to reclaim in order to move forward with their life”,

2. Parcels – Withorwithout

On the back of the release of their debut album last Friday, Parcels have unveiled the terrifying video for ‘Withorwithout’. Starring Milla Jovovich, no less.

3. How To Dress Well – Body Fat

Tom Krell of How To Dress Well says: “The song is about the intergenerational transmission of trauma – about the way rage persists in the flesh from way before you as an individual. This is why life is painful, why love is difficult… When I first started writing it, I felt like ‘damn THIS is the song I’ve been trying to write for the last 5 years.”

4. Loyle Carner – Ottolenghi

‘Ottolenghi’ is named after, and loosely inspired by, chef Yotam Ottolenghi. The song came to life when Loyle was quizzed by a family on a commuter train about the “Bible” he was reading, which was in fact the aforementioned chef’s cookbook ‘Jerusalem’.

5. Jess Locke – My Body Is An Ecosystem

Jess has announced she will be hitting the road this December on a 6-date Australian tour, visiting fans in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Port Macquarie & Wollongong.

6. Polish Club – Clarity

This is the first taste of the Sydney rock duo’s forthcoming second album.

7. Nonô – Nothing To Me

Nothing To Me was apparently inspired by when we receive texts from various boy lixo or girl lixo (lixo means ‘trash’ in Brazilian slang). The song is about moving past these situations and no longer tolerating these behaviours.

8. Julia Holter – Words I Heard

Julia has just been announced on the first line-up for Mona Foma Festival.

9. Deep Sea Arcade – Close To Me

Close To Me is lifted from the band’s forthcoming sophomore record ‘Blacklight’ (due Friday October 26).

10. Split Feed – Homesick

Check out the new tune from the Newcastle punk quartet.
