Getting to know Ross Henry

Producer Ross Henry has shared the second single and title track off his forthcoming EP. We asked him to tell us about himself:

I am… Ross Henry, creator of dynamic, immersive, experimental electronica pop. Noise that ripples with its own pulse adorned by a myriad of velvety sonic jewels, bending, emerging and dissipating across fluctuating landscapes.

My New Single is… a celebration of movement, transience and motion in all forms. ‘Places People’ explores the space between our bare essence and the many weight bearing layers holding our identity together. Between the pillars of birth and death the stage is set to start building. Over time we can begin to solidify, become trapped, incapacitated, stuck in our roles. At the peak of the toughest parts of life it’s helpful to remember how malleable it all is. When we wear our selves loosely, it gives us room to work with the infinite beauty and simultaneous suffering on the journey. It also gives us space to connect with anyone behind it all. Occasionally I need a reminder of this. I’d love to think this track could serve to help others too.

Home is… state of mind. Body is home. Country is home. Earth is home. It’s as beautiful as is it is ephemeral. Though sometimes to go home, you must leave another. I’m not sure whether I’m the shell, the hermit crab or just a grain of sand. Maybe there’s an element of choice in that. Also… I grew up in the southwest of the UK, most of my friends/ fam there are based around Bristol / London. These days I’m based in Sydney, Australia. I suppose I’ve got two homes, very far from each other.

I spend too much time… worrying. I wouldn’t consider myself a particularly anxious person at all. Though it seems we waste a lot of energy on such things. We live in a landscape that profits from our attention usually by means of fear. It can be easy to get caught up a bit. I’m trying to do that less these days. If you don’t check yourself even the most grounded person can get caught in a positive feedback loop, a state of mind that entraps you and limits your perspective to a thin strip over time.

I’ve never… taken myself or my music too seriously. Regarding process and perspective, one of my favourite sayings comes from Brian Eno. Three simple words “it’s only art”. You can explore, mess around, throw it all
away and start again. No need to get hung up on it. No need to attach yourself to the criticism or praise of it. It’s just art, let it do what it needs to do. You’re just the vessel. You released a thing, cool now go make more. Lets flip the process on it’s head this time…

It might surprise people to learn that… I was the baby from the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind. Very surprising, mostly because that’s damn lie. However I was on the cover for a Nintendo 64 magazine back in the day. Just as influential.
