Interview: Getting to know CREO

Sydney-based alternative-rock group, CREO, have unveiled their new single ‘Juliet’. We asked them to tell us about themselves:

We are… CREO, three dudes who do our spin on indie-alt-rock n’ roll.

“Juliet” is… a song about our beloved hometown and the helplessness we have felt watching its vibrancy slowly whither. It’s no mystery, Sydney’s nightlife has seriously declined over the last five or so years and this is our view on it all. We’ve had some awesome wins recently with the lifting of restrictions and whatnot (although not much we can do about it in this current pandemic situation) so there is a lot of hope for the future but it will take a while to build back up.

Home is… Sydney. We grew up around all different areas of the city and some of our fondest memories as a band have been in some of the great venues, rehearsal studios and recording studios that this place had (RIP)/has to offer.

We spend too much time… labouring over our music in the studio. Not so much a bad thing – but the constant back and forth and never ending rabbit holes we find ourselves in can sometimes be mentally torturing! The little textured nuances that have become a staple in our music take a significant chunk of time and thought!

We’ve never… actually ever used anything but guitars, drums and obviously vocals on our records apart from now. When recording we’ve always made a very conscious effort to use only what we would if we were to perform live. This single is the first time we’ve ever used a synthesizer or any instrument we wouldn’t normally use in a live setting to create a particular sound or texture.

It might surprise people to learn that… Carlos and Jorjee play (or used to before the pandemic) in a Futsal team in Sydney’s Inner-West every Monday night. Us and a few other musically inclined misfits make a bit of motley crew, who don’t do too well in the grand scheme of things but the passion is there!
