Black Rabbit George – Track By Track

Gold Coast-based artist Black Rabbit George has just returned with his sophomore album ‘Warren’ – produced and recorded by the artist at his home studio. We asked him to talk us through the tracks:

1. Always Ending

I’m a fan of trippy intro’s and interludes. After I finished the album I sat down and played around with some feedback and reversed a few of the album tracks to see what they sounded like. I ended up with this after a long night, I almost deleted it but thought something weird might be a nice moody way to begin.

2. Bones Getting Thin

I started this one last winter. My heater had broken and I spent a few days in my studio freezing and editing this thing. The lyrics are just what came to me at the time, that’s not my usual approach as I often spend weeks editing the words until I’m happy. But I felt the whole thing created the exact mood of the cold studio. So, went with whatever came on that cold winter week.

3. Phased

My drummer said I should write a song with a phased-out effect on the drums. So, I did it. I recorded the drums first then built up from there. I’m in love with anything that drones in a song so I asked my violin player to play one long note through the whole track. The idea was to be kind of hypnotic or trippy or whatever. I think I accidentally took a guitar riff from something in the 60’s but it is what it is.

4. Fingers Radio

I had a random night out, then came home and spent many hours looking into the mirror and talking to the air freshener. The lyrics came from the air freshener and I’ve since realised what an insightful object she is. This song really confirmed to me what I wanted to sound like, it’s been a long time coming.

5. Minder

I was doing my best to channel the 70’s Laurel Canyon sound for this one. It doesn’t sound anything like that in hindsight, but songs never end up the way they were intended with me. My mission for the album was to have as many repetitive basslines as possible, and I definitely succeeded in this one. My flat mates were driven a little crazy with how many times I had played it over and over while editing it.

6. Kit String Tangle

I wanted to make the sound of the Southern French country side where I spent the early 2000’s. Imagine stone houses, wild horses’ cheap wine and food home grown. If the song works you should smell the baguette in the air.

7. Get So Old

I think I almost made a pop song here. Sorry for that, it just kind of happened. I spent a week or so thinking about deleting it, but it just got stuck inside my head so I thought I’d chuck it near the end of the album.

8. Puppido

Here’s a song for my ex’s dog. Once again, I think I was channelling the south of France here. I also thought finishing with an instrumental would be a nice thing to do for you, hope you like it. There’s even a string section in there just in case you wanted it too.
