Ten things you need to know about Dulcie

Western Australia-based band Dulcie have recently dropped their new single, Dust. We asked them to tell us ten things we need to know about them:

1. Ash is a twin! She was born one minute before her sister and are non-identical. They really made the most out of it growing up and would often play pranks on people pretending they could feel each others pain and telepathically communicate. These days they are quite different, but still share a unique bond and remain very good friends.

2. Sas & Meeks have known each other since they were 2 years old growing up together in Denmark, WA. Their families have always been very close and still are!

3. Madi started out playing the violin at age 6 and switched to the drums at 8 years old. Sas started out on the drums before picking up the guitar and Meeks also started out on the violin before moving to bass.

4. ‘Dulcie’ is the name of Ash’s great grandmother. Ash only learnt about her around the time that the band was forming and never knew that there was someone else who loved singing within the family. When thinking of names to call the band, Ash recalled ‘Dulcie’ and it stuck ever since. According to it’s Latin origin, Dulcie means ‘sweet’.

5. Ash played a gig with Madi before Dulcie existed back when Madi was still in High School! This was Ash’s first solo gig and she wanted to get a band together. To make this happen she invited anyone she knew who could play an instrument to join the project and in doing so one of the cello players suggested Madi for drums. Even though they went to the same school (2 years a part), this was the first time they ever played together and got to know each other.

6. Ash has 3 pet ducks called Jeremy, Rachel and Nemo. When Jeremy was younger she could take him for walks around the block with her dog and he would follow behind!

7. Sas has double-jointed elbows and one leg longer than the other.

8. Ash grew up in a country town up North called Dampier. At the time there were no piano teachers so her mum decided to become one to teach her how to play. She never learnt to read sheet music but was taught through a playing based method called ‘Simply Music’ which encouraged a more practical and improvisational approach. Sas & Meeks both picked up their instruments in a similar way too, mainly self taught or by ear instead of traditional sight reading.

9. Timieka grew up on a farm for 15 years and Sas spent lots of her childhood living at a salmon camp with her family.

10. Before every Dulcie show, studio session, photo shoot or ANYTHING. We do a team hands-in and all four of us need to be a part of it along with anybody else that’s part of our little crew for the day.
