Getting to know D’Arcy Spiller
Melbourne/Naarm rising star D’Arcy Spiller dropped her sophomore EP, Disarray, last week. We asked her to tell us about herself:
I am… currently people-watching with a batch brew in my hand (espresso and batch brew are my go to caffeine choices). It’s 10am and I’m usually still in bed struggling to get up. I also can’t go to bed before 11pm my brain doesn’t allow it.
Disarray is… about chaos, disorder and confusion. I wrote a lot of the tracks during lockdown. I was trying to explore my shadow self and tell the story of my beautiful sisters experiencing mental health problems. Share the feeling of meeting someone and knowing them but not ever having actually met them before (soul recognition), and share my belief that Mother Nature has taken things into her own hands after letting us procrastinate on fixing the environment for so long.
Home is… wherever I feel the most like myself and wherever family is. Home isn’t always a house.
I spend too much time… procrastinating, trying to find a good TV show or film on Binge, standing in front of the fire at my parents house in winter and sitting in the sun in summer. I also spend too much time quarrelling with my four adult siblings ( they’re 21, 21, 23, 24) and doing tarot cards.
I’ve never… understood jellyfish. They terrify me!
The last 18 months have been… a whirlwind of expected and unexpected. Never would have thought I’d be able to say when I’m 60, ‘when I was young we had to stay home for weeks on end because of a virus‘. I’ve also grown a tremendous amount in the past 18 months spiritually, musically and as myself generally. Being alone can bring out some dark but tremendous things you never knew were there.
It might surprise people to learn that… when I started vocal lessons at age 6, I learnt to sing songs by listening to songs repeatedly because I couldn’t properly read yet. I also absolutely hate chicken. I hate it because of dissecting dead baby chicks in biology class in high school. I’m also scared of Dalmatians because one that was trained as a guard dog chased me in Italy at an estate until I jumped a flight of stairs and then jumped into a pool.
