Our top ten tunes of the week – October 12

These are the songs that have been getting us going over the past few days:

1. Gruff Rhys – Celestial Candyfloss

The former Super Furry Animals man will drop his new album Sadness Sets Me Free in January. This, incredibly, will be the 25th album he has released in his 35-year career individually, collaboratively and as a member of various bands.

2. Lo Carmen – I Just Had To Run

The genre-defying Aus artist has shared the first single from her forthcoming untitled eighth album recorded with her long time band The Great Beyond – Sam Worrad (Holy Soul), Ken Gormly (Cruel Sea) and Cec Condon (Mess Hall). It also features Lo’s father, Peter Head, from prog rock icons Headband.

3. Salarymen – Second Sight

Along with the new single and video, Salarymen are set to head on a fresh set of tour dates on the East Coast of Australia. They are playing at SXSW Sydney as well, so check them out if you’re going.

4. gglum – SPLAT!

gglum is the moniker of London-born songwriter Ella Smoker.

5. Royel Otis – Fried Rice

Alongside this new single, the Sydney act have announced their debut album, PRATTS & PAIN, out February.

6. LASHES – Make Your Move

Here’s a new one from the Melbourne-via-Ballarat electro-pop artist.

7. Guided By Voices – For The Home

GBV are set to drop their third album of 2023 (and 39th overall), Nowhere To Go But Up, in November.

8. Robert Baxter – blue

The Naarm/Melbourne-via-Yorta Yorta Country/Shepparton artist has dropped a new track and self-directed video.

9. Dirty Versachi – Fantasy Control

On the clip, the artist says: “I wanted the film clip to be a fun and playful take on naughty fantasies. I wanted it to feel camp and fun, but also serious, impactful, and meaningful.”

10. The Leaning – As The Ladies Dance

An ex-ballet dancer and a tattoo artist met whilst working on a building site, and the Brighton psych-noise and surf-rock duo was born. Here’s their new track.
