Something You Said’s top films of 2024

There were plenty of great movies that hit the silver screen this year. Here are Something You Said’s top twenty:
1. The Substance
This brilliant, brutal body horror film, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, saw career-best performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.
2. Anora
A sex worker from Brooklyn gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and marries the son of an oligarch, but things go very awry. Mikey Madison is outstanding in the lead role.
3. Kneecap
A story about the defense of native cultures told through sex, drugs and hip-hop. Very entertaining stuff, with a cracking soundtrack.
4. Dune: Part Two
Stunning, sweeping cinema in this sequel which continues to build its universe.
5. All of Us Strangers
Emotional and beautifully told, with magnificent performances from Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal.
6. The Holdovers
Yes it did come out this year (in the UK and Australia at least). Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph shine, while Dominic Sessa makes a remarkable feature debut.
7. The Outrun
A story which sees Rona tiptoe her way out of addiction and into the wild beauty of Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Saoirse Ronan is as incredible as ever.
8. Civil War
Four journalists travel across the United States during a nation-wide conflict, aiming to reach the White House to interview the president before he is overthrown. It’s set in the dystopian future but let’s be honest, it doesn’t feel that far in the future, does it?
9. Challengers
Sexy tennis.
10. I Saw the TV Glow
The representation of characters that differ from the norm is a joy to witness in this creative retelling of the a boy struggling with his grief, the loss of his mother, the loss of his friend, and the eventual loss of childhood.
