Getting to know Charlie Lane

Singer-songwriter Charlie Lane has dropped a new single Gold Drips. We asked her to tell us about herself:

I am… Charlie Lane, a Naarm-based singer-songwriter. I identify as a queer and disabled artist. I have been writing songs since I was 16. I’m a very eclectic artist but fall under the genres of indie pop and rock.

2024 has so far been… absolutely hectic, amazing, pretty much an emotional rollercoaster which I am so grateful to be on. It made me fall in love with music all over again and in a new way.

My single Gold Drips is… musically varied, you have Adam my co writer with this dirty electric guitar solo, vocal wise it goes from pop to rock to blues, there’s these gliding new wavy synth sections from Jasmine Johnston and you have Jethro Kalt on bass and Louis Spencely on drums who give their own extra bit flavor. It’s written around an enmeshed family situation, and also a co – dependent relationship. I wanted to write what a struggle it is to break out of the bond of loyalty and dependence of others.

Home is… whenever I see my brothers and sister. They’re my best friends. We have different mums and the same dad but we grew up in the same households, so we never thought it was any different. No matter where I am now, we talk almost every day. My younger brother is always at the front of my shows heckling and my sister is on merch.

I spend too much time… overthinking haha, well I think a lot of artists do, that’s where the good lyrics come from.

I’ve never… hated or disliked a genre of music and never will. I mean I don’t exactly get influenced by heavy metal but there is still so much to be respected about it.
